The UMUC Library helped to celebrate Open Access Week in support of free and open access to scholarly/scientific information and open educational resources. Stephen Miller, Associate Vice Provost of the UMUC Library, posted a commentary on UMUC's Engage site that publicized and described this important development in higher education. The UMUC library annually reviews our electronic resource collections to ensure that the resources are best meeting the needs of UMUC's programs, taking into account the cost of individual electronic resources, year-to-year cost increases, and available financial resources. The Library has obtained input from the Deans of the Undergraduate and Graduate Schools, Associate and Assistant Deans, and Program Chairs from the affected program areas.
As of December 31, 2015, Web of Science (incorporating Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Science Citation Index Expanded, and Social Sciences Citation Index) will be replaced with Scopus. These resources do not contain content in the form of journal articles, e-books, etc., but are used for bibliographic analysis of scholarly literature such as cited reference searching, finding highly cited articles on a topic, and determining relative rankings of publications and authors. Scopus allows for similar functionality with a feature set that will continue to effectively provide the kinds of deep analysis of scholarly and scientific literature required by advanced programs such as Doctor of Management.
Also as of December 31, 2015, the Journal of the American Medical Association and the New England Journal of Medicine will no longer be provided. Articles from these journals will be available through interlibrary loan (Document Express), and coverage of medical-related topics will continue to be covered by research databases such as CINAHL, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE, and Health Source.
With input from the schools, the Library uses the following criteria to regularly assess subscription library database resources:
- The number of times the resource was accessed in the previous fiscal year
- Overall cost of the resource and its per-use cost
- Whether similar content was available in another resource or on the Web
- How instrumental a resource is in supporting the UMUC curriculum
- Whether the resource provided access to full text within the databases
- Collection comparisons and benchmarking against UMUC peer institutions
Meet Our New Employees!
- Ena Djordjevic, a new student worker with the Library's circulation and document delivery department, is pursuing her MLS at the University of Maryland, focusing on archiving and digital databases. She previously completed a master's in Poetry from UMD and plans to concentrate on literature databases, international librarianship, and Eastern European library development.
- Melissa Foge is the new Library Associate for Reference and Instruction and will serve as liaison to the Graphic Communications, Arts, and Communication Studies programs in The Undergraduate School. She received her Master of Library Science from the University of Maryland, College Park in May and has a Bachelor of Music Performance from Penn State University.
- Andrea Jaeger, Library Services Specialist in the circulation and document delivery department, has worked in library settings since graduating from the University of Utah with a double major in history and political science. She will begin the MLS degree program in 2016 at the University of Maryland, College Park, and has previously worked as a shelver, circulation desk assistant, archival volunteer, and library technician.
- Alex Pirela has been hired as the new Assistant Student Archivist. Some of Alex's duties include arranging and preserving the historical records of UMUC and making them easily accessible to anyone interested in the University's history. Alex is currently enrolled in his first semester at the University of Maryland's iSchool. He is pursuing a Masters of Library Science degree with a specialization in Archives and Digital Curation.

- Cynthia Thomes, Reference and Instruction Librarian, served as a panelist at the Fifth International Conference on Engaged Management Scholarship in September, 2015, along with DM professor John Sherlock, DM program alumna Kuan Collins, and University of South Florida professor Grandon Gill. The panel discussed why it's important for managers and employees to be proficient at searching free and subscription databases and provided tips for developing/improving search skills.
- Yu-Hsiu Wang, Electronic Services Librarian, co-edited a chapter entitled "Technology in Academic Libraries" for the book Academic Library Development and Administration in China, published by IGI Global.
- Lenore England received the 2015 American Library Association/Association of Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) Presidential Citation for extraordinary vision to build a culture of philanthropy within ALCTS.
- Lindley Homol was awarded the ACRL Early Career Librarian Scholarship to attend the 2015 ACRL conference in Portland, OR.
Library Staff Appointments
- Megan A. Davis, Reference and Instruction Librarian, was named Chair of the Distance Learning Section of the ACRL (Association of College & and Research Libraries) in July 2015. The Distance Learning Section is a group of professionals working to support the library needs of distance education students and faculty within higher education.
- Stephen Miller was named Chair of the USMAI Council of Library Directors in July 2015.
- Ryan Shepard, Reference and Instruction Librarian, has been appointed to the Enhanced Learning Module team. His duties include determining metadata and other requirements for the content management system that will be used to catalog the Open Educational Resources and other learning objects associated with ELM classes.
The UMUC Library provides library liaison services to UMUC faculty. We welcome the opportunity to work closely with faculty to provide tailored library services for individual classes, whether it be visiting your online or face-to-face class, assisting in adding information literacy components to specific course assignments or projects, or providing handouts or online resources customized to your discipline or current course topic. Library liaisons have been actively involved in The Undergraduate School's e-resource project by providing assistance in locating open access e-resources. Please keep the liaison librarians in mind when you have library related questions, need extra help with research, or need instruction on how to use our resources.
