All of us at the UMUC Library bid a warm welcome to all new and returning students, faculty, and staff as the fall 2014 semester gets underway.

As always, we at the Library strive to provide our users with the most up-to-date electronic resources possible. Please see Electronic Resources News below to learn about some of the latest enhancements to our databases.

UMUC Librarians continue to represent the University at both local and regional conferences. Please see the UMUC Library Staff News section of the newsletter for details, as well as information about staff changes within the Library.

UMUC librarians are available for research assistance through a variety of formats, including e-mail and live chat, as well as instant messaging and telephone during regularly-scheduled hours. Individual research consultations are available in-person, by phone, or via Web Conferencing. See Ask a Librarian for more information and to schedule an appointment.

The Library is committed to student success and retention. Faculty are encouraged to take full advantage of the Library's liaison program and course-related library instruction.

Electronic Resources News

Please note these recent enhancements to the UMUC Library's electronic resources:

  • Web of Science
    Two new features are now available: Easier research discovery through seamless links between the open web and the Web of Science, and a simplified user interface to help users research more efficiently.
  • LexisNexis Academic
    Users will now be able to search by date going back up to 30 years, or by narrowing down to the day, current week, or previous week. Users can also avail themselves of new search forms for tax law and accounting.
  • ScienceDirect
    New interface updates are available for recommended articles export option with multiple download capabilities, as well as a book citation export function for easier downloads.


UMUC Library Staff News

New Acting Assistant Director for Public Services for the UMUC Library

Julie Harding has assumed the role of Acting Assistant Director for Public Services for the UMUC Library. In this role she will oversee all reference and instruction operations and reference personnel in the library. Julie received her Master's of Library Science degree from the University of Maryland in 1998, and is currently a student in the MBA program at UMUC. Previously, she was the head of reference at the Engineering and Physical Sciences Library at the University of Maryland from 1998-2004. From 2004-2014 she served as Course Manager for UCSP 611 and UCPS 615 at UMUC. 

Library Staff Presentations and Publications

  • What You Need to Know About Moving Collections and Acquisitions Into An E-Dominant Model!
    Lenore England, Assistant Director for Electronic Resources Management, will present at the Charleston Conference in November 2014 with Gerri Foudy, Manager of Collections, and Angie Ohler, Head of Acquisitions, both from the University of Maryland, College Park. The presentation will address how and why they have moved to an e-dominant model, and the new acquisitions strategies libraries can use in crafting an e-dominant collection.
  • Use an OER Instead of a Textbook? A Story of OER Curriculum Success at UMUC
    Lindley Homol, UMUC Reference and Instruction Librarian, co-presented with Megan Wilson, Project Specialist for the UMUC Learning Solutions Group, at the Finding and Adopting High Quality Open Educational Resources Meeting on June 2, 2014. This presentation discussed the collaboration between the UMUC Library and Learning Design & Solutions on the replacement of traditional textbooks with open educational resources across UMUC's Undergraduate School.

Library Liaisons

The UMUC Library provides library liaison services to UMUC faculty. We welcome the opportunity to work closely with faculty to provide tailored library services for individual classes, whether it be visiting your online or face-to-face class, assisting in adding information literacy components to specific course assignments or projects, or providing handouts or online resources customized to your discipline or current course topic. Library liaisons have been actively involved in The Undergraduate School's e-resource project by providing assistance in locating open access e-resources. Please keep the liaison librarians in mind when you have library related questions, need extra help with research, or need instruction on how to use our resources.

How College Graduates Solve Information Problems Once They Join the Workplace, the October 2012 report from the University of Washington's Project Information Literacy, discusses how employers are finding newly-hired recent college graduates deficient in their ability to conduct job-related research. UMUC librarians endeavor to better equip UMUC students, in partnership with their instructors, in the provision of research instruction - either via the UMUC online learning management system or on-site. The transferable skill building and concept understanding that librarians offer in these sessions provide a deeper comprehension and comfort level for students in locating, evaluating, and using information relevant to their studies and workplace tasks. This preparation and reinforcement hold students in good stead as they navigate the vast amount of available information during their academic careers and as productive employees and citizens.
