As the 2011 summer semester begins, my colleagues and I in the UMUC Library warmly welcome all new and returning UMUC students, faculty, and staff. We wish all of you the best for summer 2011 at UMUC!

I'm excited to announce that a big change will be coming to the library Web site later this summer with the implementation of a new search service that will provide for quick, intuitive cross-searching across all of the Library's electronic resources. In our annual user satisfaction surveys, respondents frequently mention the desire for a more comprehensive and easier to use search interface. Academic libraries have begun recently implementing newly-developed   "discovery tools" that pull together information from the library research databases to create a unified search experience. We are currently working on implementing one of these services and look forward to having it available later this summer.

Also, the look and feel of the Library Web site will be changing later this summer to match the main UMUC Web site. All UMUC departments are making this transition, and we are busy making changes and improvements based on experience with the existing Web site, best practices for academic library sites, and user feedback.

Please take a moment to read our latest newsletter, which includes information about updates to the library's electronic resources, library presentations and publications, library workshops, and more.

Remember that UMUC librarians are available for research assistance 24/7 via e-mail and live chat. In-person and telephone assistance at our Largo location and instant messaging and texting services (standard charges to your phone may apply) are also available during selected hours from the Ask a Librarian page. Weekend walk-in and telephone research assistance are also available at our office in the McKeldin Library on the University of Maryland College Park campus.

Faculty: Please take full advantage of the Library's liaison program and, summer online workshops, and course-related library instruction!

Electronic Resources News

Updates and Enhancements

  • LexisNexis AcademicNow allows you to eliminate duplications from your search results and provide enhanced search forms.
  • NetLibrary is moving to EBSCO and will be renamed eBooks on EBSCOhost as of July 1, 2011! Some noteworthy features of this new design include
    1. View eBook Table of Contents from search Result List
    2. Navigate to eBook chapters or sections directly from Result List and Detail Record
    3. Search within a book for specific terms, yielding a list of hyperlinked pages
    4. Create notes and retain links to the eBook pages viewed when notes were added
    5. Place a hold on limited simultaneous user books that are currently checked out, and view place in line
  • Web of Science  - Has been updated with improved search and navigation tools that automatically search for term-variants, refine your search by database, create a Marked List across the platform, and preview abstracts from your results list.

Electronic Resources Changes Taking Effect July 1, 2011, for FY12

The UMUC Library supports your research needs through our 127 databases and other electronic resources. As part of our collection management assessment for fiscal year 2012, the Library performed a careful review of UMUC's library electronic resources in light of current budget constraints. Factors taken into account included the following:

  • Number of times the resource was accessed in the previous fiscal year
  • Whether similar content was available in another resource or on the Web
  • How instrumental a resource is in supporting the UMUC curriculum
  • Whether the resource provided access to full text within the databases
  • How often a resource was used by UMUC librarians for instructional purposes, its cost, and whether we found a lower cost equivalent substitute

Input was solicited from faculty throughout the university. Below is the list of changes that will take effect July 1, 2011, or January 1, 2012, as noted below.

UMUC Librarians Present Cybertour at Computers in Libraries Conference

Tech Support at a Distance: Tips &  Tools

John Coogan, Systems Librarian, and Li Fu, Digital Services Librarian, presented the Cybertour Tech Support at a Distance: Tips &  Tools, at the Computers in Libraries conference in Washington, D.C. on March 23, 2011.  Mr. Coogan and Ms. Fu discussed the challenges that patrons sometimes encounter when accessing the UMUC Library, and demonstrated the front-end tools for patrons and back-end tools for librarians developed by UMUC librarians to resolve technical issues.

Checklist Manifesto for Electronic Resources: Getting Ready for the Fiscal Year

Lenore England, Digital Resources Librarian, Li Fu, Digital Services Librarian, and Stephen Miller, Associate Provost for Information and Library Services, presented a webcast entitled Checklist Manifesto for Electronic Resources: Getting Ready for the Fiscal Year on April 1, 2011 at the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Conference in Philadelphia, PA. The presenters discussed the application of the principles of The Checklist Manifesto by Dr. Atul Gawande to the electronic resources management transition process each fiscal year. As a simple, but effective tool, the electronic resources management team found that checklists help make priorities clearer and prompt people to function better as a team. Also explored were the use of checklists in an online tool called Springshare LibGuides and implementation of checklists in other library functional areas. In addition, Lenore England and Li Fu gave a poster presentation on the same topic at ACRL 2011. Both presentations were well received and sparked so much interest that some librarians expressed their intention to implement checklists for managing electronic resources and other functions at their libraries.

Electronic Resources Evaluation Central: Using Off the Shelf Software, Web 2.0 Tools, and LibGuides to Manage an Electronic Resources Evaluation Process

Lenore England, Digital Resources Librarian, and Li Fu, Digital Services Librarian, co-authored an article entitled Electronic Resources Evaluation Central: Using Off the Shelf Software, Web 2.0 Tools, and LibGuides to Manage an Electronic Resources Evaluation Process. The article was published in March 2011 in the peer-reviewed Journal of Electronic Resources Librarianship, Volume 23, Issue 1. The authors examined the electronic resources evaluation process as a critical part of electronic resources management and offered a flexible, economical, and simple solution to bring all of the components together.


UMUC Library to Offer Summer Online Faculty Workshops

Beyond Library Basics Workshop

The UMUC Library, in conjunction with Faculty Development, will present the popular workshop, Beyond Library Basics: Choosing, Using, but Not Abusing Information Resources (CTLA607). This workshop, facilitated by Reference and Instruction Librarian Neal Pomea, endeavors to strengthen faculty's own research and help them more effectively design assignments that incorporate information literacy objectives. Topics covered in the workshop include the following:

  • Determining and using authoritative resources for conducting initial background research
  • Determining and using the library's subject guides and course guides as beginning places for research
  • Locating and critically selecting library research databases and appropriate Web resources for specific information needs
  • Differentiating between scholarly, professional, trade, and popular resources, and using each type effectively for research
  • Critically evaluating information resources
  • Complying with legal and ethical standards for copyright protection and academic integrity when retrieving information, making information available to others, or otherwise using information in an academic setting
  • Managing references found during research and citing quotes, paraphrases, and summaries according to the most frequently used formats at UMUC, e.g. APA, MLA, Chicago/Turabian, etc., including how to use RefWorks.

Beyond Library Basics (CTLA607) will run from July 11-22 and will be an asynchronous workshop conducted through Web Tycho. For enrollment information, please see Web site.

Open Educational Resources Online Workshop

Information and Library Services, in conjunction with Faculty Development, will offer the online workshop The World of Open Educational Resources: How to Find, Evaluate and Use OERs in Your Classes. The workshop, facilitated by 24/7 Services Coordinator Joe Rawson and Reference and Instruction Librarian Cynthia Thomes, is designed to acquaint participants with finding, evaluating, and using educational materials—such as videos, audio clips, images, lecture notes, reading lists, course assignments, and lesson plans—freely available in repositories on the Internet. Topics covered in the workshop included copyright and accessibility of OER, advantages and disadvantages associated with their use in classes and methods to adapt OER for classroom use. The asynchronous workshop, conducted through Web Tycho, will run July 25-August 11. For enrollment information, please see Web site.


Google Universe Workshop

Google Universe: How to Make the Most of Your Students' Favorite Resource

The UMUC Library, in conjunction with Faculty Development, once again offered the popular workshop, Google Universe: How to Make the Most of Your Students' Favorite Resource during the Spring semester. This workshop, facilitated by Reference and Instruction Librarians and SUS library liaisons Ryan Shepard and Ed O'Donnell with the assistance of Advanced Technologies Librarian Kee-Young Moon, aims to teach faculty members the advantages and disadvantages of using Google as a tool for academic research. Topics covered in the workshop include performing advanced searches in Google that afford more precise and useful results, accessing and generating maps in Google Maps and Earth and using them as instructional tools and linking to full text of articles in Google Scholar search results using the library's custom  "find it at UMUC" links. Google Universe, which ran from from May 2 – 9, is an asynchronous workshop conducted through Web Tycho.

Research continues to be available to UMUC students, faculty, and staff in the ILS office in McKeldin Library, Room 6259. Normal hours are:

  • Saturday: 10am-6pm
  • Sunday: 2pm-8pm

Center for Internet Security
Combining the Security Benchmarks division, the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center, and the Cybersecurity Workforce Development division, the Center for Internet Security strives to enhance the cybersecurity readiness of entities in both the public and private sectors.

Department of Homeland Security National Cyber Security Division
The National Cyber Security Division (NCSD) works collaboratively with public, private and international entities to secure cyberspace and America's cyber assets. NCSD works to achieve its strategic objectives through the following programs: The National Cyberspace Response System, the Federal Network Security branch, and Cyber-Risk Management Programs.

Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center
The Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC), a division of the Center for Internet Security, is the focal point for cyber threat prevention, protection, response, and recovery for the nation's state, local, territorial, and tribal (SLTT) governments.

National Cyber Security Alliance
The National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) is a collaborative effort among experts in the security, non-profit, academic, and government fields. NCSA aims to teach consumers, small businesses, and members of the education community about Internet security by providing free tips, checklists, and best practices for remaining safe while online.

US-CERT is charged with providing response support and defense against cyber attacks for the Federal Civil Executive Branch, as well as information sharing and collaborative projects with state and local government, industry, and international partners. US-CERT interacts with federal agencies, industry, the research community, state and local governments, and others to disseminate reasoned and actionable cybersecurity information to the public. US-CERT also facilitates methods for citizens, businesses, and various institutions to communicate and coordinate directly with the United States government about cybersecurity.
