Stephen MillerOn behalf of everyone in the UMUC Library, I extend best wishes to all new and returning UMUC students, faculty, and staff as the fall 2011 semester gets underway.

I am pleased to announce the implementation of the UMUC Library OneSearch service, which allows for cross searching of most of the Library databases. In our annual user satisfaction surveys, respondents frequently mention the desire for a more comprehensive and easier to use search interface. Academic libraries have begun recently implementing newly-developed  “discovery tools” that pull together information from the library research databases to create a unified search experience. I want to remind everyone that UMUC librarians are available for research assistance through a variety of formats including e-mail and live chat and in-person and telephone assistance during regular business hours at our Largo location. Instant messaging and texting services (standard charges to your phone may apply) are also available during selected hours from the Ask a Librarian page.

Faculty: Please take full advantage of the Library's liaison program and course-related library instruction.

UMUC Library OneSearch Is Here!

Information and Library Services is pleased to announce the launching of UMUC Library OneSearch. This service, made available in conjunction with EBSCO Publishing, allows users to find scholarly articles, books, and/or other research resources via a single search engine. With UMUC Library OneSearch users can simultaneously search most of the databases to which the UMUC Library subscribes, either directly or as additional resources. Because UMUC Library OneSearch is built on the popular EBSCO platform, the search interface will be easily recognizable and popular EBSCO features such as searching limiters, signing in to access personal folders, the ability to save searches and set up alerts are all included in UMUC Library OneSearch.

While the majority of databases the UMUC Library makes available are included in this service, some databases are not currently available due to contractual limitations between individual vendors and EBSCO. These databases must be searched individually. See What databases are included? for details.

For more in-depth, subject-specific research you will still need to search each relevant UMUC library research database individually in order to be more comprehensive in your searching. The Subject Guides provide listings of relevant databases for specific subject areas. Please contact Ask a Librarian for further assistance with any academic research need. Electronic Resources News

The UMUC Library makes a continued effort to ensure that our patrons have the best research resources possible at their disposal. There have been additions and updates to what we make available since our last newsletter:

  • Factiva, a great resource for current news and business topics, has a number of interface enhancements, including a new Simple Search bar, an improved Search Builder for keyword and business searches, and easier to view search results.
  • Oxford Scholarship Online, our new resource,  which includes e-book titles in history and psychology, has enhanced functionality, including personalization features and user-oriented linking, improved search and browse, and access to even more high quality scholarship.
  • RefWorks, the Library's citation management tool, will have a new interface called RefWorks 2.0 this fall.  RefWorks 2.0 will offer increased functionality over the current RefWorks interface–RefWorks Classic. You can take a look at the RefWorks 2.0 interface now by clicking on the "RefWorks 2.0" link in the upper-right hand corner when you are logged in to RefWorks Classic. Enhancements available in RefWorks 2.0 include a simpler interface with key functions via new buttons, navigation toolbars, action icons, light boxes, and collapsible menus with one-click features and support resources. A guide to using RefWorks 2.0 will be available soon on the UMUC Library's RefWorks page.


UMUC Library Staff Publications

  • I Came, I Saw, I Researched: Students Reflect on Library Life in Six-Word Memoirs
    Reference and Instruction Librarian Robert Miller published the article "I Came, I Saw, I Researched: Students Reflect on Library Life in Six-Word Memoirs" in the June 2011 issue of College & Research Libraries News. The article describes an extra-credit exercise Mr. Miller included in LIBS 150, the required undergraduate library skills course at UMUC. In this exercise, students reflect on their library research experiences in six-word "memoirs" that they posted in a discussion thread in the online classroom.

  • Electronic Reserves Services in Distance Education Environment
    Electronic Services Librarian Yu-Hsiu Wang’s article "Electronic Reserves Services in Distance Education Environment" was published in Proceedings of the 4th 21st Century Librarian Seminar US - China Library Forum: Information Services in a Networked Environment.. The Seminar was organized by the Yunnan Library Commission of Higher Education. One hundred and eighty four selected papers were collected in the conference proceedings, including submissions by library professionals from various provinces in China, as well as six team members of librarians from the US and Canada.


UMUC Library to Offer Fall Online Faculty Workshop

Information and Library Services, in conjunction with Faculty Development, will once again offer the popular workshop, Beyond Library Basics: Choosing, Using, but Not Abusing Information Resources (CTLA607). This workshop, facilitated by Reference and Instruction Librarian Neal Pomea, aims to strengthen faculty’s own research and help them more effectively design assignments that incorporate information literacy objectives. Topics covered in the workshop include the following:

  • Determining and using authoritative resources for conducting initial background research
  • Determining and using the library’s subject guides and course guides as beginning places for research
  • Locating and critically selecting library research databases and appropriate Web resources for specific information needs
  • Differentiating among scholarly, professional, trade, and popular resources, and using each type effectively for research
  • Critically evaluating information resources
  • Complying with legal and ethical standards for copyright protection and academic integrity when retrieving information, making information available to others, or otherwise using information in an academic setting
  • Managing references found during research and citing quotes, paraphrases, and summaries according to the most frequently used formats at UMUC, e.g., APA, MLA, and Chicago.

Beyond Library Basics (CTLA607) will run from October 17 through October 28 and will be an asynchronous workshop conducted through Web Tycho. For enrollment information, please see Faculty Development.

The UMUC Library provides library liaison services to UMUC faculty. We welcome the opportunity to work closely with faculty to provide tailored library services to individual classes, whether it be visiting your online or face-to-face class, assisting in adding information literacy components to specific course assignments or projects, or providing handouts or online resources customized to your discipline or current course topic. Please keep the liaison librarians in mind when you have library related questions, need extra help with research, or need instruction on how to use our resources.
