KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Keynote speakers will offer reflections and congratulations to graduates at each of the university's commencements at the Xfinity Center.

Keynote speakers will be announced in early May. For the full press release regarding UMGC's commencement speakers, visit our Global Media Center.

The Xfinity Center ceremonies will be available for live viewing via webcast. Access the webcasts by visiting umgc.edu/commencement 15 minutes before each ceremony.

STUDENT SPEAKERS

Eligible graduates are encouraged to apply to deliver the student speech at Spring Commencement 2020. The speech is a UMGC tradition and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acknowledge and congratulate your fellow graduates.

The doctoral program faculty will nominate and select the doctoral commencement student speaker.

Students eligible for the weekend commencements are encouraged to audition for the role of student speaker at their respective ceremony. To qualify, you must be eligible to participate in spring commencement. You must also meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum cumulative GPA (as of February 15) of 3.0 for undergraduates and 3.5 for graduate students
  • In good disciplinary standing (no record of academic integrity or code of conduct violations)
  • No overdue balances (must be current if on payment plan)

Student speakers will

  • Prepare a five-minute speech that will inspire, motivate, and encourage everyone in attendance
  • Offer words of thanks to the faculty, family, and friends whose support has kept the graduates motivated and encouraged
  • Participate in pre-ceremony speech revisions and coaching sessions, and attend a rehearsal on May 14 (doctoral speaker only) or May 15 (weekend speakers)

Each ceremony will feature one student speaker. Speakers march in with the platform party and sit on stage during the ceremony. Student speakers at the weekend ceremonies also receive

  • Reserved seating for their ticketed guests
  • A reserved parking spot adjacent to the Xfinity Center
  • A complimentary photo with President Miyares and the keynote speaker

SING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM

As an eligible graduate, you're invited to audition to perform The Star-Spangled Banner and the UMGC Alma Mater during the ceremony. Those selected will make a memorable contribution to commencement.

Each ceremony will have its own student singer. The selected singers will march in with the platform party and sit on stage during the ceremony. Student singers at the weekend commencements also receive

  • Reserved seating for their ticketed guests
  • A reserved parking spot adjacent to the Xfinity Center
  • A complimentary photo with President Miyares and the keynote speaker
